Chiroubles Wine — Complete guide to the altitude cru
Chiroubles is the most airy of the Beaujolais crus. Set at 400 metres altitude on pure pink granite soils, it produces floral, silky wines of remarkable lightness. It is often the first Beaujolais wine to convert Burgundy lovers. Here is everything you need to know.

What is the Chiroubles appellation?
Chiroubles is one of the ten Beaujolais crus, AOC since 1936. With around 370 hectares of vines, it is one of the smallest crus. Its production area is concentrated in the commune of Chiroubles, in the Rhône department.
The grape variety is exclusively Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, as for all Beaujolais crus. But here, the altitude and pink granite give Gamay a unique expression: floral, light, silky.
Chiroubles terroir — altitude, pink granite and wind
Altitude is the signature of Chiroubles. The vines are planted between 300 and 500 metres, the highest in all of Beaujolais. This altitude lengthens the ripening period and preserves the natural freshness and acidity of Gamay.
The soil is pure pink granite, very free-draining and nutrient-poor. The roots dive deep to find water, concentrating aromas and producing precise, fine wines.
The north wind regularly sweeps the vineyard, naturally reducing disease and avoiding treatments. Domaine de Voujon cultivates its Chiroubles parcel at lieu-dit Fontenelle, on pink granite soil, south exposure.
The Domaine de Voujon Chiroubles cuvée comes from a parcel at 410 m altitude. Hand harvested, 100% tank ageing — no oak to mask the fruit.

What style of wine is Chiroubles?
Chiroubles is the cru for lovers of finesse. Its aromatic profile revolves around peony, violet, wild strawberry and fresh raspberry. On the palate, it is light, silky, with almost absent tannins and a persistent floral finish.
It is often the favourite Beaujolais of Pinot Noir lovers. Its delicate texture, freshness and lightness make it a perfect wine for refined meals, delicate pairings or simply a beautiful evening.

How to serve and taste Chiroubles
Serving temperature: 12 to 14°C — Chiroubles is served slightly cooler than other Beaujolais crus. Too warm, it loses its lightness and floral character. Decanting is not necessary.
Vintages: Chiroubles is best enjoyed within 2 to 4 years. The 2024 vintage is particularly successful: hot but not scorching summer, acidity preserved.
Food and wine pairings with Chiroubles
Creamy poultry dishes: chicken in cream sauce, veal blanquette, guinea fowl with mushrooms.
Goat's cheese: crottin, sainte-maure, picodon — the classic, timeless pairing.
Lightly sauced fish: trout meunière, salmon with beurre blanc — Chiroubles is one of the rare reds that pairs beautifully with fish.
Our recommendation: Chiroubles 2024 with a mushroom risotto.
